Abstract

This study examines Imam Ibn Kathir’s meticulous engagement with the Prophetic Sunnah in his seminal exegesis, Tafsir al-Qur’an al-’Azim. The research aims to highlight Ibn Kathir’s scholarly stature, his exegetical methodology, and his profound dedication to the Sunnah. The study provides an overview of Ibn Kathir’s biography, including his lineage, upbringing, demise, mentors, and disciples, while shedding light on his most prominent scholarly contributions. Furthermore, it clarifies his methodological approach to interpreting the Qur’an via the Sunnah, illustrating his reliance on Hadith and his integration of the views of leading exegetical authorities. Utilizing an inductive and analytical approach, the research examines selected applied models from his Tafsir to demonstrate how he engaged with Prophetic traditions and the subsequent impact on expanding Quranic semantic indications. The findings underscore the critical importance of referring to the Prophetic Sunnah in Quranic exegesis. The study concludes that Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir stands as one of the most significant works that afforded the Sunnah an exceptional status in clarifying the Word of Allah—a position of undisputed scholarly merit. The analyzed models further reflect Ibn Kathir’s profound erudition and his sophisticated methodology in directing exegesis through the Prophetic Sunnah.
