Abstract

This research aimed to highlight the most important comments made by Yahya ibn Hamzah al-Alawi, a prominent figure in the field of rhetoric, on the concept of metaphor. The significance of the study lies in documenting these comments, which summarize that metaphor for al-Alawi is related to meaning. The study is divided into three main sections, preceded by a theoretical introduction that consists of two parts. The first defines the concept of commentary, while the second discusses the significance of metaphor in rhetorical criticism. The main body of the research is divided into three chapters:

  1. The first section examines the term "metaphor" and its concept.
  2. The second section examines the commentary on the implicit tool: whether it falls under the category of metaphor or simile.
  3. The third section discusses whether metaphor resides in the word or in the meaning.

The conclusion summarizes the main findings of the research on al-Alawi's comments, including that metaphor represents a claim about the same thing rather than a mere transfer of expression; that a simile lacking a face and tool falls under metaphor, not simile; and that metaphor exists in the meaningful interpretation of the word, rather than in the word itself.
