The phenomenon of the singular and its impact on Arabic grammar

Abstract

It deals with a grammatical phenomenon that has the main, fundamental, and essential effect on the parsing of the word in the sentence, in three grammatical chapters: 1- The defective noun 2- The indeclinable noun 3- The adverb. The research focused on explaining the effect of this phenomenon on the parsing of the word in the grammatical chapter, and did not care to explain the differences between ancient grammarians - or even modern grammarians - in explaining and interpreting that parsing; Therefore, it was not the researcher's concern to present the grammarians' various justifications for preventing the nouns and adjectives they mentioned from being declined: such as the seven types of proper nouns: feminine, foreign, Yemeni, which are based on the pattern of a verb, compound, and ending with an alif and a nun. Although studying the details of what is not declined is not one of the research's objectives, he added two types of what is not declined that were not mentioned by ancient or modern grammarians, namely: 1- Ending with a ya and a nun, such as: Tishreen 2- Ending with a waw and a nun, such as: Khaldun. The research consists of: an introduction, then three sections: 1- The first section: It discussed the effect of the singular phenomenon on the parsing of the defective noun, and showed that defining the defective noun as (ending with a ya) is wrong; Because the letter Yaa - if written - comes out of the door, and does not return as a defective word. 2- The second section: talked about the adjective and the non-declinable, and proved that the ancient grammarians - due to their lack of knowledge of the Semitic languages, especially ancient Yemeni - were unable to provide a convincing explanation for preventing the various nouns from being declined. 3- The third and final section came to talk about the effect of the singular phenomenon on the inflection of the adverb, and that it makes it built on the damma.
